Aqua Teen Hunger Force

History of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Launched in late 2000, fast food mascots Master Shake, Frylock and Meatwad have been entertaining late night viewers for almost seven years now. First conceived in the now abandoned Space Ghost to Coast script, the Aqua Teens role was to cover the Space Ghost’s unpaid bill by promoting their restaurant on his show. Executive producer Mike Lazzo, believing that the episode featured too little of the Space Ghost, elected to nix the script for production.

Soon after, however, the Cartoon Network began shopping around for new projects for their newly named Adult Swim, a programming block for adults, and Dave Willis and Mike Maiello had just the thing to fit the bill. The rest is show biz history.

Since airing in December of 2000, Aqua Teen Hunger Force has gone on to become one of Adult Swim’s most watched shows. So successful in fact, that we will be graced by the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie in March, 2007.

Cast of Characters

  • Frylock, voiced by Carey Means, is a red box of French fries, who wears an attractive goatee, dental braces and a blue mystical jewel embedded in his back. The voice of reason and something of a moral authority, Frylock uses his fries as limbs while trying to protect Meatwad from Shake’s wrath, as well as generally smoothing out ill-conceived schemes gone predictably awry. Scientifically minded and intelligent, Frylock can often be seen conducting scientific experiments in his bedroom, which incidentally, contains his library, a super computer, cloner and various other pieces of lab equipment. As you may have guessed, Frylock is the most intelligent among his Aqua Teen cohorts and frequently spends his time in vain trying to convey a sense of morality to both Meatwad and Shake.
  • Master Shake, voiced by Dana Snyder, more commonly known as “Shake”, is a feeble-minded, mean-spirited, wrathful, well, milkshake. With his pink straw and two yellow chicken hands, he hatches ill-thought out schemes and malicious attempts to attack is fellow Aqua Teen, Meatwad. Shake, the catalyst in most of the shows hare-brained escapades, makes wild, illogical decisions and childish demands. And of course, Shake, being quintessential Shake, considers himself the unchallenged, supreme leader of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
  • Meatwad, voiced by Dave Willis, is a mass of compressed meat. Child-like and naïve, Meatwad rolls around and hops to get from one place to another, and since he’s made of ground meat, he is also something of a shapeshifter. Regularly morphing into an igloo, a hotdog and a star is par for the course for Meatwad. On rare occasions, he morphs into a “Samurai Lincoln”. The hot dog and igloo, however, are his two main shapes. Unfortunately, because Meatwad’s not very bright, he endures the wrath and schemes of Shake.
  • Carl, voiced by Dave Willis, is the Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s neighbor. He has the dubious distinction of being the only character not on the Aqua Teen Hunger Force, as well as the only human character on the show. Bald and overweight, Carl dresses casually in a stained wifebeater and sweats, while sporting a gold chain and green flip flops. Complementing this distinguished fashion sense is his prolific collection of pornography, his poor self-esteem and his questionable hygiene. Despite these shining attributes, Carl is frequently reduced to paying for his, ahem, female companionship.

That’s a Wrap

So, why watch a box of red fries, a milkshake and a glob of ground beef run around and create havoc and mischief? For all the hilarious hijinks of course! In all seriousness, Aqua Teen Hunger Force is a welcomed antidote to a stressful day; the perfect embodiment of tuning in and dropping out.
