The origin of how bling bling came to be is a hotly debated topic. Here is what we do know. In the early 1990s, Cash Money Millionaires, a family based out of New Orleans, claims to have first used the term. Rapper Baby Gangster took it a step further when he used the term in a song title.

At the same time, however, the term was recorded in Jamaica’s Kingston newspaper, “The Gleaner”, on December 18th 1999. Here it was referenced in a picture story about Christmas decorations on a house that had lights on it spelling out the phrase “It’s a Bling Bling Christmas to Y2K.”

Bling bling, was further cemented into our consciousness when in 2003, the Oxford English Dictionary made the word, along with the slang terms jiggy, dope, and phat, official by adding them to the renowned dictionary.
