Why Attend A Camp for Troubled Teens?

There are several different kinds of camps for troubled teens, but the main goal of each is to test the teen, to get them away from whatever bad situation they were in, and to get them thinking about their lives and the directions they are taking.

Camps for troubled teens can address behavioral issues, alcohol or substance abuse, improve spirituality or help with weight loss. There are numerous teen camps available these days, and it pays to spend some time thinking about your needs and wants from a camp before you enroll a child.

Types of Camps For Troubled Teens

When most people think of a camp for troubled teens, they probably think of a boot-camp style program where teens, who might be there against their will, are put through a military-style training program that helps them learn to deal with authority figures and discipline.

Another popular type of camp for troubled teens is the wilderness camp, which is similar to the boot camp style program in that it takes kids away from home and puts them in an unfamiliar situation. Instead of using military exercises, these camps focus on hiking, rock climbing and other challenges that come from nature to build the teen's self-esteem and problem-solving skills.

There can also be a therapeutic aspect to these programs, which involves talking about self-destructive behavior and the emotional issues facing the troubled teen.

Beyond these broad categories, there are some other variations in the types of camps for troubled teens.

  • Length of program: One of the big differences among camps is the length of the program. Some camps take place over a weekend or a few days, while others are a month or longer. The right program for your teen will depend on the extent of the behavioral problems.
  • Ownership: Some programs are state-run and are designed to work with teens that have been in trouble with the law. Others are private programs that the parents pay to send their children to.
  • Cost: State-run boot camps are free, but most of the people in them will be court-ordered to be there. These might be just the sort of people you want to keep your teen away from. Private camps can be quite expensive.
  • Location: A state-run program will keep your child close to home, which may or may not be a good thing. Private programs are all over the country so you can really get your troubled teen away from his or her current life and into a totally different situation with these programs.
  • Content: Some camps for troubled teens are very intense, while others focus more on the therapeutic aspects. Again, your needs will help you determine which camp is right for your teen.
  • Consent: Some programs require the consent of the teen before taking him or her into the program. Other camps will take teens without their consent. If you know that your child will not go on his or her own, you might need to find a program that will take unwilling participants.

Finding the Right Camp

The Internet is a great resource for finding information on camps for troubled teens. Search for programs that meet your needs in terms of location, duration, content and cost. It might take some digging to find the right program for your child, but it is absolutely worth it if the program can change your child's life.

Many families have found success treating behavioral or emotional problems with a camp for troubled teens. They are not the right option for all families, but if you feel like you're at the end of your rope and don't know what to do, these camps can be a big help.

I'm 18. I went through a 15 month military/drug rehab boot-camp. I hated it. And now my relationship with them is worse than it ever was. "This hurts me more than it hurts you" What a load of crap.
