Chat Center for Teens
From LoveToKnow Teens
Chat Center for teens provides a fun, relaxed online space where teenagers can find friendship and maybe even young love.
Chat Center for Teens Basics
The Site
Chat Center is a site purely devoted to free chat rooms. Parents should know that Chat Center is also home to chat rooms intended for college students, adults, and singles, so teens taking advantage of the teen-focused areas of the site are just a few clicks away from more adult fare.
Rooms
Users can choose from three separate teen chat rooms:
- TeenChat is the site's general chat room.
- TeenFlirt seems to be the most active of the three chat rooms. You'll find less conversation here, though, and more requests for girls or guys to contact another chatter, watch a web cam, or contact someone outside the chat room.
- While a preteen chat room would typically be reserved for users who aren't yet teenagers, because the site doesn't allow users under 13, the Pre-Teen Chat room at Chat Center is actually designated for younger teens that are 13-15.
Set-Up
Chat Center for Teens uses the Chat-Web chat server. No log-in or sign-up is required to use the service; you just choose a name and start chatting. However, registering allows you to create a personal profile so other chatters can learn more about you.
There are several messaging options. Users can add sound to a message, send an action message like "CuteGrrl waves to the room", and change the font and background color of messages. Messages can be sent to the entire room or "whispered" to one member. Clicking on another chatter's name in the list of current members offers even more options. You can view profiles, send files, ignore members, or initiate a private chat. Private chats take place in a new window so you can carry on a personal conversation while still keeping an eye on the action in the main room.
The Rules
Chat Center for teens does not allow children under 13 to use its rooms. Chat Center also cautions users against giving out any personal information while chatting, such as their phone number or address. The most important rule for the Chat Center is to treat other chatters with respect. A note on each page reminds users not to type in all capital letters, which is considered shouting in the online world, or to fill the screen with text. In keeping with the theme of respect, harassment and racist comments are forbidden. The site also asks users to avoid excessive swearing. Additionally, advertising is not allowed.
Inappropriate actions are grounds for removal from the chat room. Users can also be banned from the chat server, and the site threatens that extreme cases may be reported to the ISP of the offending party. Moderators patrol all rooms to make sure these rules are enforced, keeping Chat Center a safe and fun place for teens. When a live person isn't available to keep watch over the room, Mobert, a Chat Center bot, is on the lookout for inappropriate language, even in user names.
Advertising
Since it's a free service, Chat Center must pay for its site with advertising. For the most part, advertising consists of a few unobtrusive banner ads at the top and to the sides of the chat window. There are also pop-up ads, although with many web browsers and pop-up blockers, they'll never see the light of day. However, the ads are largely from dating sites and cell phone chats, products parents may not want promoted to their teenagers.
