As a teenager, your body needs nutrients because you are still growing. You may not think about taking care of yourself much right now, but you will thank yourself years down the road. You don't want to set yourself up for future medical problems due to malnutrition as an adolescent.

Traditional Diets

There are many different diets available on the market today. Many of these diets require you to eliminate certain foods completely, while others have to do with limiting your intake of only certain foods. All of these diets may be effective in losing pounds quickly, but they may not keep it off or be healthy.

Diet Pills

Diet pills are not a good way to lose weight. You can become addicted and they can have detrimental side effects. You may become lean on them, but you may gain weight once you stop taking them.

Starving Yourself

Easy weight loss for teens doesn't mean starving yourself. As mentioned above, your body needs vitamins and nutrients for it to grow and function properly. If you starve yourself, you will put yourself at risk for medical issues and have a hard time concentrating in school. You also may not be able to excel in a particular sport you play because of the lack of energy caused from not eating. Furthermore, if you starve yourself, your body will start to gain weight rather than lose it. Your brain is smart and thinks it must take precautions when it doesn't get the food it needs. Therefore, instead of shedding fat, your brain will take the food you do eat and store it, resulting in increased fat gain.

Bulimia Nervosa

A friend may tell you that binging on food and then purging is a great way to lose some pounds. This is false. Bulimia Nervosa is a serious disorder with dangerous repercussions. Just with starving, you can gain weight. You will also experience stomach upset, bloating, sore throat, weakness, dizziness, a ruptured stomach, acid reflux, ulcers, mouth sores, or tooth decay and discoloration.

How to Lose Weight as a Teen

You can shed pounds without crash dieting. It took you a few months to put on the pounds, so it will take you a few months to take it off again. Here are some healthy and easy ways for you to shed those pounds.

Healthy Eating

Eliminate junk foods from your snack or meal times. If you get hungry between meals, choose a fruit or vegetable rather than chips or cake. When you sit down to eat meals make sure you choose foods that are not fatty. Look at the food pyramid and choose foods for each mealtime that will satisfy each of the different food groups.

Drink more water. Did you know when you drink water it fills your stomach much like food does? When you are dehydrated, it can make you feel hungry instead of thirsty as well. So make sure you get enough water (at least 8 glasses a day). Drink a tall glass of water right before you sit down to eat; it will help you consume less food.

Exercise

This is the best compliment to a healthy diet. Doing cardiovascular exercise such as running, biking, aerobics are all good ways to burn fat and calories. If you haven't been active up to this point, start out slow and work yourself up to a full exercise routine. You will feel great after a workout and you will see improvements in yourself in a few weeks.

Diet Plans

There are some diet plans that are good for you. Weight Watchers has a good system of counting points so you know how much you are taking in during meals and snacks. It shows you how to change the way you eat so you can keep the weight off.

Remember…

You are still young so the changes you make now will benefit you for the rest of your life. It will be harder to change your habits later on in life so it's best not to let yourself go this early. It's time to take charge of your body and set yourself up for a healthy and happy life.
