Arrange for a time to call, and chat then. Never give out your home phone or cell number. You do not want to be harassed, or stalked by someone you chatted online with.

• It is perfectly normal to want to upload a cute picture of yourself, but before you do, pause to consider this. When you load that picture onto an Internet website, anyone can click on it and copy the image for themselves. It is also possible for your picture to appear on a website you’ve never even heard of, nor had any intention of visiting. This does not necessarily mean that this will happen to your picture; it is just a word of caution.

• Beware of any braggarts. Bragging about how much money one has, or how many famous friends one parties with is not attractive in real life and it certainly isn’t attractive online. If you find yourself bragging, stop. And if what you are saying is true, you have even more reason to stop, since bragging makes you an easy target for scammers.

• Choose your screen name carefully. Remember that your online compatriots will more likely than not, not know you. As such, the first impression they will form of you will be from your screen name. For this reason, choose your screen name wisely by steering clear of anything too sexual. Everyone wants to be popular, but the last headache you need is being popular for all the wrong reasons.

• Be wary of cyber bullies. This is a relatively new phenomenon, but as the newspapers prove daily, not an uncommon one. If someone bullies, threatens, or harasses you, notify the moderator immediately. Your intention for visiting the site should be to communicate with other like-minded teens. There is no reason for you to put up with that kind of stress, or to be plain, nonsense.
