High School Football National Rankings
From LoveToKnow Teens
Have you ever wondered who’s who in the high school football national rankings? What does it take for these schools to get to where they are in football and what does it take to stay there? To find out, we’ll look at all the ins and outs of high school football national rankings.
How to Get on a List of High School Football National Rankings
There are more than a few commonly accepted ‘lists’ that rank high school football teams. Most lists look at how schools are performing locally (within their own school system) and how they are performing regionally or on a state level. However, there are a few lists that you can check throughout the football season as rankings change.
USA Today
USA Today has what it touts as the ‘Super 25’; a list of the top 25 football schools. It’s considered one of the most reliable lists because it is based on other factors aside from statistics.
ESPN’s High Elite
ESPN’s High Elite is the list to follow when you are watching rankings throughout the season. Rankings are based on statistics, just as rankings within the state would be.
MaxPrep’s High School Rankings
Max Max Prep’s high school rankings are based on stats as well as other factors. In addition, Max Prep also ranks high school players.
What Does It Take to Rank Well?
Believe it or not, ranking well takes more than just winning football games. There are several criteria in addition to winning that are considered before a high school can rank.
A Good Schedule and Good Competition
When high school teams are ranked, one of the factors considered is their schedule. Are they playing other top competitive teams? Are they playing just a few games? It’s not saying much if your team wins all of its games when you only had four or five games. Neither is it saying much if you won all of your games against the worst teams in the region. The higher the other teams that you are playing rank, the higher you can rank--if you win your games, that is.
A Good Team
Nationally ranked teams have great coaches, and good players on their teams. More importantly, they have a good team ethic. Not only is it important to consider an individual’s touch downs, but nationally ranked teams have an excellent defense, and excellent offense and they know how to work together to get the job done! Of course having some nationally ranked football players (who rank based solely on their stats) certainly helps.
Notable Schools
Not every school has a great season every single year. Yet some schools seem to stand out more than others when it comes to showing up in the top 100 schools. Here are a few schools to watch that consistently come in above their peers.
- St. Xavier in Ohio has a long and impressive list of championships. This is a school to watch and while they might not come in at number one every year, they aren’t going away any time soon.
- Mater Dei in California has an enviable record. They consistently turn out record-breaking seasons with an overall record of 453 wins and 167 losses. Mater Dei is currently only one of two high schools to produce two Heisman trophy winners. Add to that list a lengthy record of championship wins at the regional, and state levels and this is definitely a team to watch.
- De la Salle in California is yet another school that consistently produces top athletes that go on to play in the NCAA and the NFL. (Amani Toomer is a De la Salle graduate.)
- Northside in Georgia is a relative newcomer to the scene of top schools. However, any school that consistently wins back-to-back state championship deserves some attention.
- Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas is another newcomer. Lacking the type of funding that some of the private schools have, it still manages to stay competitive year after year. This program continues to grow and they keep winning.
Who’s Your Favorite Team?
Whether your favorite local team is nationally ranked or not, watching high school football is fun and is a great way to support kids in your local community. Most, if not all, of the high school teams that consistently rank in the top have a great support network of coaches, parents, and fans to cheer them on.
