Getting On the Right Track

Some students love science fairs and projects. Most do not. If you are one in the majority absolutely dreading that huge chunk of your grade that depends upon your science knowledge and creativity, then you are not alone.

Many students procrastinate working on their high school science projects due to that lack of enthusiasm. However, what they do not understand is the stress they place on themselves by waiting until the last minute – until they are living the night before its due date, scrambling to finish up.

So get on the right track with your science homework this year by finding out early on what is expected of you and giving yourself a realistic timeline to work with.

Choosing a Project

Below are just a few examples of high school science projects that can be done successfully if you are willing to put out the effort towards excellence.

Earth Science

  • Understanding the Greenhouse Effect
  • Health risks of the ozone layer
  • How to forecast the weather
  • The effect of garbage on the environment

Environmental Science

  • Acid rain and the environment
  • Water conservation
  • The effects of urbanization
  • Treating water with chemicals

Chemistry

  • Do different brands of popcorn leave different amounts of unpopped kernels?
  • Understanding the effect of controlled atmosphere storage on food
  • pH level of acid in our stomachs
  • How does heat affect food and the environment?

Biology

  • Differing resting pulse rates in males and females
  • How sun block works
  • Blood pressure in different people groups
  • Jet-lag and its effect on professional athletes

These are just a sampling of the many science project ideas found on the Internet and in books you can easily borrow from your local library. Still don’t see a topic you find interesting? Talk to your teacher, family and friends. Sometimes students just need an inspirational push to get started, and the rest comes fairly easily after that.

Bringing Professionalism to Your High School Science Projects

When putting together a high school project, there are a few rules to follow. Simple things can improve your grade and show that you put forth an effort.

  • Always type out your presentation, paper, and displays
  • Use the same font and keep it simple
  • Keep your poster board, corkboard, demonstrative tools, etc. clean and well put together
  • Avoid using scotch tape whenever possible
  • Never smash your project into your locker
  • Ask for a ride to school if you usually walk so you aren’t struggling to keep your project in one piece

Showing Off Your Project

Nowadays, public speaking is a huge part of high school science projects. Practice your presentation in front of whoever will listen, even if it is just your bathroom mirror. The more you rehearse, the more prepared you will sound and you will come across as having a firm grasp on the knowledge you are presenting. Don’t work hard on a perfect display only to be caught not having answers to student and teacher questions. The more you know and the more you practice, the more successful you will be.

A few things can help in getting you ready for your presentation:

  • Bring notecards with you
  • Use visuals both to engage your audience and to jog your memory
  • Practice in front of friends and family

A Note to Parents

As a parent of a high schooler, one of the most important investments you can make in their education is personal time. By encouraging teens to work hard on their science project, attending their science fair, and lending support when they need it most, you are showing your teen that you love them and desire to be involved in their life.

Offer to be an audience for a presentation, to accompany them to the store to get their supplies, or actively ask them questions about what they are working on in school. Science projects are a great way to bring the whole family together both for quality time and for a little intellectual stimulation..
