Hollister Clothing
From LoveToKnow Teens
Parents of teens know that Hollister clothing is a must have for many teenagers.
Fads and Favs
Hollister clothing has certainly made a name for itself among teens across the nation and even around the world. Fads and favorites come and go, but once a clothing line is adopted as "cool" by teenagers, the rest is history. Hollister, American Eagle, and Aeropostle continue to rein supreme as fashion icons among preteens, teens, and young adults. Hollister stores are full of hip displays which continue to introduce cutting edge fashions. Shoppers are enticed by the array of clothing items, accessories and the mood set by alternative rock genres piped throughout the store.
Many of the stores also feature video walls which play live feeds from Hunting Beach, California, which creates the illusion of a surfing environment in stores from one end of the country to the other.
Hollister Clothing History
The parent company of Hollister is Abercrombie & Fitch, which features Southern California surfing motifs. In July 2000 in Columbus, Ohio, Hollister's first store was opened. However, many people fall for the fictional background story written by Mike Jefferies, which states that Hollister was created as a pacific merchant shop in 1922 by J.M. Hollister in California. This story was merely created to add more interest to the clothing line.
Today, the stores have jumped the border from the United States and spread into Canada, including Toronto, Alberta, and Ontario. From there, the company has spread to the United Kingdom with stores in Brent Cross and Westfield, London.
Clothing Influence
How does such a major clothing line work its way into the often fickle preferences of young people around the world? Hollister practices the theory of walking advertising, in which the clothing advertises itself with brand names, logos, and initials featured on individual clothing pieces. In other words, if you wear a piece of Hollister clothing, the fictional 1922 date, name, or the seagull logo is typically displayed for all to see. The addition of the seemingly worn, faded, vintage look adds to the clothing's appeal. Shoppers often stroll through the store just to experience the Southern California atmosphere made complete with imitation beach shacks, shuttered windows, boardwalks, and deep colored walls. Spotlights focus on merchandise displays, while the rest of the store features a low-lit, cozy atmosphere. Wooden tables, benches, cots, and shelving are used to display clothing and other featured products. Shoppers can rest their weary feet in the lounge area typically located in the center of the store.
Clothing Choices
Who loves Hollister clothing? The line is immensely popular with preteens, teens, and young adults, both male and female. Clothing for women is referred to as "Bettys", and clothing for men is referred to as "Dudes". Styles include the following:
- T-shirts
- Polos
- Henleys
- Shirts
- Fleece
- Knits
- Jeans
- Outerwear
Accessories include flip flops, belts, and more. Hollister also offers body care products, such as lotions, lip glosses, lip balms, body mists, cologne, and perfume. Pricing is considered affordable, although some may argue that the prices are still not as budget friendly as many families would prefer. For those who are value conscious, shopping at the end of the season can bring clearance prices and some great deals.
Finally, if you still don't know what to expect from a Hollister clothing store, check out Hollister's website to browse the online catalog. For women's clothing, click on "Bettys", and for men's clothing, click on "Dudes". There is also a listing of stores, and don't forget to venture into the online lounge.
