How Much Money to Give for High School
Graduation
From LoveToKnow Teens
Knowing how much money to give for high school graduation will help you feel better about whether you are offering a reasonable amount. You don't want to give too little and have the graduate think you are frugal, but you don't want to give too much resulting in financial hardship.
Deciding How Much Money to Give for High School Graduation
How much money to give for high school graduation depends on the student and her future plans. It also has to do with how much you can afford to give depending on your financial situation.
The Graduate's Future Plans
High school graduates have many paths they can take. Graduates can seek employment or further their education in college or a trade school.
- Employment after graduation
If the graduate plans to start working and live on her own, you may want to help with getting the person well on her way. Living expenses can be overwhelming as well as transportation costs to and from work. If he or she is moving into a new apartment or house, you might want to give some money to help with decorating.
A reasonable amount for graduates who seek employment and live on their own is around $100. If the person plans to live with his parents and work, $50 would be a good amount to buy a nice graduation gift.
- College Bound
If the graduate is college bound and plans to live in a dorm, he will need money to buy some of the conveniences of home. This would include soaps, towels, food, and laundry supplies. College students will also need money to buy school supplies such as books, pencils, calculator, pens, highlighters, etc. Don't forget the cost of decorating an otherwise dreary dorm room.
A college student living away from home could use $100 for purchasing necessary school items. If the student plans to live at home and commute to classes, the cost of gas can be expensive and he or she will still need to pay for school supplies. A good amount for someone living at home and attending college is $75.
- Technical or Trade School Plans
If the graduate plans to attend a technical or trade school, she most likely will live at her parent's home or in her own place. A trade school student will need similar school supplies as a college student and in some cases, additional supplies for the particular trade she is studying. If the student plans to live in her own place, she will appreciate money for home décor and other necessities.
The amount you should give to high school graduates living in their own place and going to a technical or trade school should be around $100. If graduates plan to stay home with their parents, $75 is a good amount for gas, school supplies, and a nice gift.
Considering How Much You Can Give
If the above amounts for how much money to give to a high school graduate seem high and you don't think you can afford it, that’s okay. No one has written how much you should give in stone. This is a gift; graduates should appreciate any amount of money they receive. Consider how much you are able to give and have faith that the person will be happy with it.
Alternatives to Giving Money
If you can't afford to give enough money that makes you feel comfortable, you may consider purchasing a graduation gift. This way, you can stay within your budget and the person won't know exactly how much you spent. Remember, it's not what you give, but the thought you put into it.
