How to Dress Emo
From LoveToKnow Teens
If you’re a teen wondering how to dress emo, the following tips will help you achieve this unique style.
The Emo Movement
Goodbye gothic clothing and hello emo! Emo style has become the hottest way to dress with a little bit of creativity and a lot of rocker rebellion. How to dress emo is pretty simple, but getting the look to appear natural and unfussy is part of the whole game. The following wardrobe staples are perfect for those looking for advice on emo style. Get in the car, head to the mall or the thrift shop and pick up the following emo wardrobe must haves.
How to Dress Emo: Wardrobe Basics
To get the emo look right, you’ll need to gather the following. Mix and match your collection daily to add interest and versatility to your look.
Studded Belts
Studded black belts are a must have for an emo. You’ll need a chunky accessory just like this to take in the waist of long tunic shirts or to wear low slung on the hips for a rocker appeal. Studded belts should be made of high quality leather (as long as you’re not a vegan!) to increase durability. Go ahead and drool over this collection of of vintage belts, but rest assured you can afford this hot little belt from Hot Topic.
Skinny Pants
Get ready to rock the skinny pants! Not only are they back in style, they’re the basic staple in an emo wardrobe. Rather than shop for designer denim like Seven jeans, scoop up a pair of black skinny pants, which will add a rocker punk look to all your tops, tanks, or dresses. Check out these skinnys from Paper Denim&Cloth for a hip emo look.
Sweater Vests
Everyone should own a sweater vest. Completely versatile and basic, a sweater vest is timeless. Paired with a turtleneck in the fall, a white dress shirt for your first job interview, or over a dress for a carefree summer look, a sweater vest is a smart investment.
Tip: Buy the best knit you can afford, and hold onto this item for dear life. No trades, no donations and certainly no forgetting it somewhere on the college campus. One day, when you’re all grown up, you’ll search all over for the perfect sweater vest, and be happy that you kept it. It will never go out of style.
Suspenders
You aren’t rocking the grandpa look when you’re wearing suspenders! Suspenders are totally hip and work great for emo style. Paired with a tighty white tank, wife beater or your favorite rocker T, suspenders are just plain cool. Check out these skinny suspenders from Urban Outfitters and pair them with your black skinny pants or a pair of black shorts for a hip summer option.
White Tees
What good would a wardrobe be without a ton of white shirts? The perfect place to layer up, gather up and go crazy with this cotton basic is American Apparel. Made right here in the United States, you can feel great about wearing a cotton shirt that is comfy, sexy and perhaps made by fellow emos. Check them out here. Gals can even pick up a funky pair of their wild hued tights or leg warmers to add some quirk to your ensemble!
Jewelry
Daggers, swords, eyeballs and skulls are all, of course, welcome additions to your wardrobe. The best advice for jewelry is to wear what you love. You don’t need to wear all of the above to express your unique style. In fact, many emos buy just one signature piece that is unique and tough, with a touch of bling bling.
Something Quirky
Finally, to top off your emo style, wear something quirky that fits your unique persona! Miss the good old days of the Girl or Boy Scouts? Why not collect a bunch of these utterly cute and handmade merit badges to sew on your favorite jacket or pair of jeans?
Unique and handmade items from websites such as Etsy can help you create an emo look that is cool, effortless and entirely you.
Collect something that identifies and separates you from the rest of the emo pack. After all, fashion, whether it is emo style or any other trend, is only what you make of it.

Miki,
People will say things to get you upset no matter how you dress. If you are comfortable with who you are including what you wear then that is all that matters.
-- Contributed by: Marcelina HardyI'm 14, and at school, most everyone that isn't my friend, and some of them too, always look at me like I'm a freak just because I'm into the whole emo scene. Like, people have called me suicidal too. THAT AIN'T COOL.

You have two options - do what you're friends want you to do (do you really want to be manipulated that way?) or find friends who appreciate who you are. Personally, I vote for the latter. Hang in there! School doesn't last forever.
