How to Get Good Grades
From LoveToKnow Teens
Do you know how to get good grades? Studying isn't the only way to ensure good grades on your next report card. There are certain skills that everyone can learn that can help everyone get the grades they want and deserve. If you've been struggling, read on for some tips that you can put to use today!
Take Notes
Good note taking skills can mean the difference between excelling in school and simply getting average grades. Your note taking skills have a lot to do with how you learn in class and how well you study. If you have poor note taking skills, you'll have trouble remembering what your teachers have taught in class. The following tips will help you take better notes, which will help you increase your grades at test time.
- When a teacher says something like "Pay attention to this," or "Does everyone understand this concept?" they are giving you a clue that this will probably be on an exam. Write this information out or highlight it in your textbook (with pencil if highlighters aren't allowed).
- Write out words or terms you don't understand. After class you can look up the information, write it down, and be prepared for the next quiz or test.
- Read your notes before class so you'll be better prepared to ask questions about things you don't understand. It will also help you to be ready for those pesky pop-quizzes.
- If you have trouble remembering things, try copying your notes over after school. This will allow you to organize the information you learned during class and put it in your long-term memory.
- Use a separate sheet of paper for each day of notes and keep a separate folder or notebook for each class.
- Leave room on each page of notes for information you may need to add later – like definitions or examples.
Listen in Class
While it may be difficult to pay attention in class, especially if your new crush is sitting nearby or there is a big dance in a few days, good listening skills can help improve your grades.
- Attitude is everything. Even if you really don't like the class you are in, listening is important. Chant a mantra in your head if you need to, like "Concentrate" or "Focus."
- Look at your teacher when they are talking. One of the easiest ways to drift off or get side tracked is ignoring the speaker. Don't look around the room, start reading your textbook or doodling in your notebook. If you don't pay attention, you'll miss those clues your teacher is giving about your next test.
- Resist the urge to work on things unrelated to the class you are currently in. Do your homework in study hall or after school, not in class.
Study Every Day
Everyone knows that they have to study to get good grades, but not everyone does this every day. Studying everyday, even on the weekends, will help you get better grades. It doesn't have to take hours, but it should take about 20 minutes to a half hour per class each day, even on the weekend.
- Review your notes every night. Taking notes won't help you to get better grades if you don't read them.
- Review your notes and assigned readings every day. Use study halls for actually doing assigned work- it will make your weekend workload much lighter.
- Don't wait until Sunday evening to do your homework and review work. Spread it out over the weekend. This will help you to alleviate stress and still give you time to do things you enjoy, aside from schoolwork.
Tutors
Don't be afraid to ask for help. Asking for assistance doesn't mean you're dumb; in fact, knowing when to ask for help is a sign of intelligence. It is important to ask for assistance if you are struggling in any of your classes. The sooner you learn important concepts, the quicker you'll be back on track.
How to Get Good Grades Everyday
While note taking, listening and studying tips can help you achieve higher grades, there are a few other things that you can do too. The following things are just as important:
- Get enough sleep. Tweens and teens need at least 8-10 hours of sleep each evening. People who are sleep deprived have trouble concentrating.
- Eat a good diet. Choose items from the food pyramid at each meal. If you eat too many carbs, you'll end up feeling sluggish and have trouble concentrating in your classes. If you have to eat cookies or crackers, limit yourself to one serving per day.
- Exercise every day. There's no doubt that teens are more active, if for no other reason they're running around to different classrooms throughout the day. However, exercise can actually help you concentrate in your school studies too. Exercise promotes relaxation and produces endorphins in the brain that will make you feel happier and more confident.
Good study habits and healthy practices are how to get good grades in school. Even if you have low grades now, following the above tips will get you back on track to better grades in the near future.
