How to Plan Middle School Graduation

From LoveToKnow Teens

Are you wondering how to plan middle school graduation for the students in your school or for your own child? Of course there isn't one perfect plan, but there are some key points you'll want to consider.

Graduation Committees

The planning of a graduation ceremony should never fall on the shoulders of only one or two people, creating a committee makes the best sense. Committee members typically include some of the school's faculty, but you may want to add a parent or two from your school's parent/teacher association. These members should get together and discuss what aspects are needed for the ceremony. Input from each member should be considered, but of course not all of the ideas that are presented at the meeting or meetings may be used. Consider appointing different roles to some of the committee members. Ask someone to lead the discussion, and ask someone else to record the minutes of the meeting.

While committee members are certainly capable of knowing how to plan middle school graduation ceremonies, liability is an important issue that must be addressed. Be sure to involve your school's administrator in the planning of your middle school graduation. The principal should give final approval of all aspects of the ceremony, especially any speeches that will be given. If possible, ask your principal to attend the graduation practice. In doing this, you will not be solely responsible for inappropriate behavior, words, etc.

How to Plan Middle School Graduation Ceremonies

As you consider how to plan middle school graduation ceremonies, make a list that includes the following:

  • Activities you want to include

This could include any processionals, introductions, music, speeches, and recessionals.

  • People who will be involved

People involved in the ceremony often include students, faculty, administration, etc.

  • Electrical equipment that will be used

Sound and lighting will both play an important role in the ceremony. Even if the ceremony will be held outside, a sound system will probably be used. It is important that an experienced lighting and sound person be in charge during the ceremony. Check both of these during graduation practice, and the person that is in charge of this part of the ceremony should get to the ceremony site early to make sure that everything works properly on the day of graduation.

  • Location

It is important that you have a rain-out location planned if your ceremony is initially scheduled to be held outside. If possible, hold two practices — one for the proposed outdoor location and one for the rain-out location. You'll also need to be prepared to make the decision to change locations in plenty of time to contact all of the participants in the ceremony.

  • Speeches

Even junior high students can give well-prepared speeches with some guidance. However, It is important that all speeches meet the approval of the committee. Students should be told that any alterations in their speech on the day of the ceremony must be approved, and if a student gives an unapproved speech during the ceremony, he or she runs the risk of being pulled from the stage. These guidelines can help ensure that a respectable graduation ceremony will take place.

  • Dress code

If your students are going to wear graduation gowns, you should still instruct the girls that their dress hems should not hang below the hem of the gown. Boys should be given a specific color of pants to wear as well. If gowns are not going to be used in the ceremony, you'll probably want to require the girls to wear a particular color dress, such as white, and boys could be required to dress in a specified pants color, such as navy, black, or khaki with a white dress shirt. Be sure and tell them if they must wear ties as well.

Finally, other elements that go into the planning of the ceremony involve seating arrangements for the audience and the participants and whether or not to hold a reception. A well-planned and organized ceremony will make this special day a success!
