Company History

Producing dungarees and jackets, the Lee Mercantile Company was founded by Henry David Lee in 1889 in Salina, Kansas. In 1913, the denim all-work jumpsuit was created, followed by the first ever “Overall” in 1920. This lay the foundation for the company’s early growth. 1920 also saw the launch of the Buddy Lee doll, a promotional campaign that quickly became a popular play doll. Through the 20’s, Lee introduced many new innovations to manufactured denim, most notably the zipper fly.

Throughout the 30’s and 40’s, Lee continued to build on their brand, becoming the nation’s #1 manufacturer of work clothes. In 1969, Lee consolidated with the VF Corporation.
