List of High School Musicals
From LoveToKnow Teens
Ever since Disney’s super popular High School Musical, everyone’s been looking for a list of high school musicals that are perfect for their school!
Factors to Consider
Luckily, there are a lot of high school musicals out there, and while you are sure to find one perfect for your troop, their still are some factors worth considering before you decide on the perfect one. Some of these factors include:
- Size of cast
The size of your cast is definitely one factor you’ll want to consider before choosing an appropriate musical. In fact, because there are so many great musicals out there, starting from this perspective may actually whittle away some of your choices, and thus, make it easier to choose the best musical for your cast.
- Size of budget
Establishing a budget and sticking to it is another extremely important aspect of a successful high school musical. Factors such as materials for the sets, and costumes should be considered, as well as the possible costs for printing playbills.
- Themes and potential messages
While scrolling through any list of high school musicals, it’s important to consider any school themes you’d like to incorporate in your production. Some schools set a theme for the year, like racial equality for example. This may be something you’d like to consider.
Equally important themes that are best avoided; usually those that are inflammatory or insensitive to those in the audience. Freedom of speech and free artistic license are of the utmost importance, but you also wouldn’t want to put any faculty members in a compromising situation.
A Comprehensive List of High School Musicals
Now that we’ve considered some key factors of choosing an appropriate musical, let’s delve right into our list!
- A Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is an all time classic! This high school musical features a cast of twenty-plus characters, so it’s ideal for a large production, and with its timely theme and melodical music score, it’s sure to keep teens and adults alike fully enthralled.
- Frank’n Styne
Frank’n Styne is a hilarious take on the Frankenstein story as the great grandson of the original comes to Castle Styne as heir to the mysteries of his predecessors, but it’s the score that really steals the show!
Maids sing “Castles Are So Hard to Dust”, the new monster sings “Its Alive” (all through which he imitates Elvis), while Ego sings about “Goin’ Choppin” as he prepares to shop for body parts. This is the perfect show for Halloween.
- A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Shakespeare’s humorous and poignant story is now a musical! Two girls and two boys, by accident and because of some very mischievous fairies, find themselves in love. First, both boys love one girl, then both girls love one boy. This is a situational comedy that everyone can enjoy.
- Hoop! The Basketball Musical
This fast moving musical, by Richard and Martha Chirappa, is about high school sports and the performing arts, and about students growing up. The plot takes the audience through the politics of the sports team, cheerleading squad, dance club, faculty and administration. This is sure to be a hit throughout high schools nationwide.
- Let It Ring
Let It Ring requires eighteen plus characters and a variable male-female chorus of at least sixteen. Margaret Smoot and Michael McLean wrote this fantastic journey through the minds of the founding fathers and how the citizens of today perceive them.
Two generic founding fathers, Patrick and James, travel to our modern day to show the audience what it was like to write the Constitution, and to discuss the importance of its principles. The score itself has a strong contemporary feel and the message is universal; one of truth and liberty.
A Final Note
No matter what musical you pick from this list of high school musicals, remember that the important thing is for the cast of characters to have fun. When the audience sees the enthusiasm, hard work and just plain fun the characters are having, they’ll be sure to have an equally great time!
