Saving your Night: Prom Dress Repairs
You will not need to panic or feel embarrassed if you have a mishap with your dress. Learn how to use each of the above tools to fix prom gown issues.
Liquid Thread
Liquid Thread is an adhesive for fabric. If a seam comes undone, you lose a button or beading; you simply glue the seam or replacement piece on the dress with the Liquid Thread. It will dry quickly, clear and is permanent. This takes the place of sewing, which makes it much easier on you if you do not know how to sew well.
Sewing Kit
If you don't have Liquid Thread or you would rather sew, make sure you have a small sewing kit with same color thread as your gown. To repair a button, you want use double thread on your needle. Go through the button five times to make sure that it is secure. If you have a loose seam, you only need a single thread. Make sure that when you are sewing you go in the same hole you came out of on the visible side of the dress. Going through the same hole will ensure that you do not see any stitching.
Chalk
This is an excellent trick if you have a silk gown. If you have a spot you can use chalk to cover the stain enough so that it doesn't show up on pictures. All you do is dab the chalk on the spot and brush off the extra dust. You will see that the stain will be less noticeable the more you dab. Do not scrub or you will make more of a mess. Also, NEVER use water to take out a spot on silk; it will cause a water stain that will be impossible to take out.
Baby Wipes
If you have polyester or other like fabric dress, use baby wipes on it to remove a spot. Do not rub or scrub the spot because it will smear it and make it more noticeable. Just take the baby wipe and dab it on the spot. If available, use a hair dryer or even the hand dryer in the bathroom to dry it. If both are not available, it will dry on its own.
Dress Tape
Dress tape is a great tool for fixing a problem until you have access to a needle and thread. This is a two-sided tape designed to take fabric and stick it to your body. You can use it on loose seams, ripped tulle or other tears on your dress.
Wax Pencil or Wax Paper
Zippers get stuck from time to time. If yours sticks you can use a wax pencil or wax paper to make it slide easier and zip correctly. Simply take the base and rub the wax pencil or paper on it. Then carefully wiggle the zipper to get it free, it should zip perfectly. Rub the wax on the backside of the gown so no one will see the wax.
Safety Pins
Probably the most important prom gown repair tool. If one of your straps breaks or you have a tear you can quickly take care of the problem with a safety pin. Safety pins are small and you place them on the backside of the dress so no one will ever know.
Keep in Mind
If something happens to your dress, it does not mean that your night is ruined. You can still have a great time with your date and friends. Do not let a tear or spot stop your special night. Fix what you can, laugh it off and have fun!
