Prom Night
From LoveToKnow Teens
Every senior tries to imagine what magic their prom night will bring.
What is Prom Night
Prom is short for the word “promenade.” The word has many meanings, but originally was known as a march of the guests at the beginning of a ball or other formal event. Today prom represents more of a formal ball celebrating the end of the school year and graduation of seniors.
History
When prom night first began, it was just a simple dance. Historians believe it began in the 1800’s. The first records of the dance have been found in yearbooks dating from the 1930’s.
Proms originated in elite colleges as a way for middle-class parents to instill socialization skills and etiquette in their children. They were modeled after the distinguished balls of the upper class.
1900’s
High school proms began to emerge in the 1900’s. Attire was kept to Sunday best and these chaperoned dances were only for the senior class. Participants had tea, socialized and danced.
1920’s and 30’s
In the 1920’s and 30’s, teens began to experience more freedoms such as access to cars and income luxuries. Prom night grew into a more elaborate affair including the introduction of party clothes.
1950’s
In the 1950’s, the war was over and proms became elaborate, expensive events. During this time, both your date and formal attire became a status symbol. Prom courts were formed during this decade.
1980’s
By the 1980’s, prom took on a life of its own and became a “coming into adulthood" dance. Prom King and Queen turned into a popularity contest.
Today
Now proms are all night affairs including dinner, the prom dance with intricate decorations and supervised after-prom parties. Though in the past you needed a date to attend, today you can go stag or with a group of friends. The prom committee spends months planning the event. This process includes finding the perfect location and theme. Prom night is considered the most important dance of your life.
Finding a Date
If you are single, finding a date to your prom is stressful. Since this night is supposed to be special, you want to go with someone who you care about. Start planning whom you want to ask a few months ahead of time. When the school announces the prom, ask them. Don’t wait or someone else may be going to prom with him or her.
It is an accepted practice to go with a friend. If you are not romantically interested in your date, go and have fun without the added pressure of trying to impress them.
Going Stag
If there is no one special you want to go with, many seniors prefer to go stag. It is not uncommon to see a group of friends going “single” and paying their own way.
Money
Proms are expensive. Traditionally the male pays, however times have changed. Your costs will include:
- Dress or tux
- Dinner
- Tickets to the prom
- Limo or gas money
- After prom party
If you have a job, start saving now in case your parents refuse to foot the bill.
Dress
Each school has a different tradition. More schools are gearing towards casual proms. However, many still make it a formal affair.
Prom Gowns
Next to your wedding, your prom is the most important dance of your life. There are hundreds of styles to pick from. Prom dresses are expensive. If you are on a tight budget, you can find cheaper dresses on sale or borrow one.
If you want to accessorize, shop for earrings and a necklace to match.
Tuxes
If your prom is black tie, you will need a tux. All bridal shops offer tux rentals. Check with your date to find out what color her dress is. You want your cummerbund and bowtie to coordinate with her colors. If you want to make a statement, rent a colored tux. Rent early for the best selection.
Corsage
You will want to get your date a corsage or boutonniere. Your local florist can help you pick one out. A corsage is usually worn on a ladies wrist, and gentlemen wear boutonnieres, which is a flower, pinned onto their lapel.
Hair and Nails
Since you want to feel like a princess, make an appointment early to get your hair and nails done by a professional. Spend the weeks before prom night looking through magazines and getting an idea of what hairstyle you want. When you go in to have your hair done, wear a button down shirt so you won’t ruin your hair taking it off.

Limo
One common prom tradition is to rent a limousine. The cheapest way to do this is to share it with a few other couples. If you can’t afford a limo, don’t worry. Most couples show up in their dad’s cars.
After Prom
After the prom, some teens may have a private party. Use your best judgment when attending. Alcohol is common at these events. You are still underage and drinking is illegal. Alcohol can cause you to do something you would not ordinarily do. If you chose to attend an after-prom party, do not be afraid to leave if you are uncomfortable. Make sure your parents know where you are.
Getting ready for your prom is an exciting and stressful time. Go enjoy your prom night. Be yourself and dance the night away.
