Why Proms are Themed

Throughout the school year, different formal and semi-formal dances may be themed but none are as elaborate as the annual prom. Prom is a bigger, more outstanding event, and as such it deserves a more intricate and unique theme to make it more special than a typical school dance. The right theme can create a stunning backdrop to coordinate decorations, photos, favors, music, and other elements into one spectacular celebration.

Finding Prom Themes Ideas

There are many places to look for appropriate prom themes, including:

  • Old Yearbooks: Check out old high school yearbooks prom themes for inspiration, but be sure not to duplicate a theme from the last five or six years, when students’ older siblings may have been at the prom.
  • Party Stores: Decorations are a critical part of a prom theme, and knowing what party supplies are easily available can help a decorating committee choose a suitable theme.
  • Movies: Popular movies and classic flicks can inspire a fun prom theme, but be sure to choose one that is appropriate for the event and not just a remake of a hit movie that won’t be trendy by prom night.
  • Websites: Many websites have detailed lists of prom themes that can serve as a starting point to choosing the best theme. Check out these websites for a wide range of options:

Types of Ideas

There are so many options for prom themes; it can be helpful to know what type of event is desired before choosing a specific idea. The basic types of themes fall into several categories, each of which offers a unique experience for a fun event.

  • Classic Themes: These popular prom themes are perennial favorites and are often easy to arrange. They may be more generic than specialized themes, but they can easily be customized for a specific school. Classic themes include Under the Sea, Memories, and Hollywood motifs.
  • Romantic Themes: As a formal event geared for couples, prom night is inherently romantic. Lovers’ themes are always a good choice and can include Celestial Magic, Parisian Passion, or Moonlight Mystery.
  • Quirky Themes: More fun, outrageous themes can be exciting prom options. They generally use brighter colors and more elaborate decorations to create themes such as Mardi Gras, a Masquerade Ball, Pirates’ Adventure, Casino Night, or Disco Fever.
  • Monochrome Themes: A simple color scheme can be elegant and sophisticated, as well as easy to decorate. A Black and White Ball or school color theme is always appropriate, but be sure to choose neutral colors that will work well for both genders – guys may be reluctant, for example, to attend a Pretty in Pink prom.
  • Geography Themes: Prom is the perfect opportunity to escape the school for a night, and prom themes ideas that use exotic geography are unique choices. While Paris, New York City, and Venice are popular for romantic themes, more unusual choices could include Egypt, Shanghai, Las Vegas, a tropical island, London, or Africa.
  • Retro Themes: A retro or vintage theme can be fun and nostalgic not only for the students, but also for the teachers who have seen many proms come and go. Popular decades for retro prom themes include the 1950s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Using retro-themed decorations and top 40 hits from the era can add even more realism to the event.

Considering a Theme Idea

When choosing a prom theme, the planning committee, class officers, and other individuals have to consider several factors to ensure the theme is appropriate and attainable.

  • Space: Does the prom location have enough space for the dancing, seating, decorations, photo areas, and other necessary accents?
  • Cost: A prom kit could cost $1,000 or more and only includes basic items. Is the budget for the dance big enough for an elaborate theme, or where can costs be trimmed to make it more affordable?
  • Decorations: An elaborate theme may be a great idea, but can decorations be made, purchased, or borrowed to create the right effect?
  • Labor: How much effort will be needed to make the theme a reality? Can enough volunteers be gathered to decorate before the prom and clean up afterwards?
  • Outlets: If the theme involves unique lighting, are there enough power outlets to support the decorations as well as the musical equipment and other necessities?
  • Location Restrictions: Are there restrictions on how prom decorations can be arranged, such as hanging items from the ceiling or walls?
  • Applicability: Is the theme suitable for the majority of students so everyone will feel welcome?

Choosing the Theme

Making the final decision on a theme can be challenging. In many schools, the prom committee or student council brainstorms a list of ideas, and the school’s administration must approve the final theme. Another option is for the senior or junior class to vote on the theme so everyone can have a say in how the night will shape up.

There are many different prom themes ideas to choose from, and knowing where to look for inspiration and what considerations need to be made for a specific theme can help coordinators choose the best idea for a memorable night.
