Current Questions

I'm 15 and will be going to my high school Homecoming dance. My date will be wearing an Orange dress. I'm not sure of the exact shade. What can I wear that goes well with this? Thank you. ~~Hunter Begy

Advice from Melissa

Hi Hunter,

Wear a black suit or tux, white shirt, and give your date a white corsage. Whatever you do, stay away from trying to match the shade. If you wear black, you'll be classy and fit in no matter what.

~~Melissa

Advice from Katie

Hunter,

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT, GO RETRO.

Black. Wear black. The pastel tux died with disco. If you give her a corsage, the flowers should be white.

You could wear an orange tie if you really want to "match" her- but matching is kind of lame. Black, with a white shirt, is always a good bet.

I’m starting 6th grade in my school. We have a dress code and cannot wear jeans or trainers and instead we have to dress smart. In my religion I cannot wear short tops, short skirts, or trousers and tops. My usual wear is skinny jeans and dresses. So, I’m kinda stuck! I have got a week left and I have no clothes to wear. It’s really depressing me because now I don’t want to go to school! Please help. ~~Ameena

Advice from Melissa

Hi Ameena,

Since you can wear dresses, that’s a starting point. There are many styles of dresses that are casual, fun, and not too short. You can also wear dresses over skinny pants (not jeans), adding, scarves, cool accessories, and different colored tights. There are also lots of things you can do with skirts (pencil skirts, tulip and A line) oxford style, shirts, and vests. Once you get through that first week or so, you may get some ideas from your friends and share or swap clothes as well. Good luck.

~~Melissa

Advice from Katie

Ameena,

Don't worry, conservative does not have to equal frumpy, Instead, consider the dress code a FASHION CHALLENGE and see what you can work with within the rules. Get creative. Embrace the turtleneck and wear fabulous shoes. In the meantime, shove all your super-trendy stuff under the bed and wear it on the weekends.

~~Katie

Hi Tired of looking,

If you are curvy, wearing boys clothing will become more difficult as you develop. Boys clothes are designed for boys- no hips, no breasts, so they're pretty much straight or too tight in all the wrong places for you. It really doesn't matter what your sexual orientation is, many girls find relaxed guys clothing more comfortable. If you feel comfortable in these relaxed looking clothes, try your local mall for starters. American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, L.L. Bean, Land's End and Eddie Bauer have lots of asexual clothing that both girls and guys can wear, and be fashionable at the same time. These particular stores cater to indviduals with your slight build, so finding clothes that fit shouldn't really be a problem. Most of these particular stores sell online and through catalogs, so just type these store names into your browser to find out how to get their free catalogs or to order clothes online.

I'm a lesbian, and ever since I was little, I was a tom boy. Then I got in middle school, to fit the "norm",I started wearing girly clothes. Now, I've realized I'm more comfortable in boy clothes, but it's so difficult to find clothes that fit, and fit well. I feel like shopping for clothes is a burden now because I can never find something to buy. Can you give me some suggestions for finding clothes that fit well? P.S. I'm 5'7", 120,thin, and curvy.

Hi Heather,

You want to show that teens prefer one clothing line over an other; in order to do this you would need to do a poll or take a survey. An ideal survey has 10 questions or less in it, people tend to get bored with longer ones.

For example, you could give the people taking the survey a list of the top 8 or 9 clothing designer lines and then leave a spot (for number 10) where they could list their own favorite clothing line (in case it isn't in your top 8 or 9). Then all you have to do is tally up the responses. The clothing lines with the most responses are obviously the favorites. If this is for a class, be sure to keep track of how many people took the survey, and how many of the people taking the survey were girls and boys (or simply all girls). Good luck with your essay!
