Teen Fashion Trends Advice

Reader Question

I was just wondering what the teen trends and fashions were right now?

Advice from Melissa

I wouldn’t begin to even try to tell you – I see so many different things that remind me of my own high school days in magazine (the 70’s) so that’s not going to help you very much. I guess you could say “retro” fashion is in! You can always look at teen fashion magazines for ideas.

I’m not sure in what part of the country you live, because sometimes trends can be regional or even affected by weather (for example, winter months in Los Angeles are different than winter months in Minnesota, so fashion might change—literally according to weather). I do know that some celebrities I know are wearing clothing that are made from organic products – because it helps the environment, or clothing that is made in “sweatshop free” factories, that don’t engage in unfair labor practices. Check out sustaneity.com/fashion.html, earthspeaks.com or www.hug.co.uk/.

My advice is to wear what is comfortable for you, which is most important.

Advice from Katie

Who cares? Don’t be a slave to the fashion overlords! FIGHT THE POWER, my friend.

Do you know who comes up with teen fashions? Old people. Fashion magazine editors. The clothing designers send the magazine free stuff and give them money. Then, the editors put the clothing in the magazine and say that it is “right now”, knowing that we, the obedient teens, will rush out and buy whatever they tell us to.

That’s all it is. So, what I’m saying is: I don’t know.

However, I do have some advice for you: leggings are a mistake. Always.

My advice is very simple and very to-the-point: never feel pressure to wear what everyone else is wearing. If you feel comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt, then wear that. If you want to fit in because of your clothes then you really aren't going to be in your own skin. I'm not saying that Delia's is bad. (Trust me, I love that store.) It is just that you shouldn't feel the pressure to dress like everyone else. My fashion advice: jeans can match with everything, from a t-shirt to a polo, and black is always in style. :)
