Teenage Bedroom Designs

From LoveToKnow Teens

Looking for teenage bedroom designs to spruce up a teen bedroom? There are many different popular designs from which to choose and a few rules of thumb to keep in mind.

Teens often enjoy bright, bold colors, such as red, lime green or deep purple.

Bold Colors

Most teens like bright colors, such as fuchsia, lime green, deep purple or red. The problem with these colors is that they can sometimes prevent the teen from resting peacefully in the bedroom. Traditional design wisdom says to use soothing colors in the bedroom, such as pale blue, green or neutrals. By marrying bold colors and neutrals, you can still create a soothing, but young and fun look. Color combinations to try:

  • Tan walls and mauve accents and accessories
  • One wall in a bold color such as lime green; the rest of the walls white
  • Boldly colored walls and neutral bedding and curtains
  • White walls with fun patterns
  • One wall with several colors painted in stripes, boxes or circles and the other walls off-white

Bold Patterns

Bold patterns add a fun and funky edge to any room. Huge circles, plaid or stripes can really bring out the young side of a room and are perfect for teenage bedroom designs.

Many of the home improvement stores now offer decals of large circles or even wallpaper prints with geometric designs. You can also tape off long stripes on the wall and paint stripes or even plaid designs in the vivid colors of your choice.

Some wall accessories to try include:

Popular Teenage Bedroom Designs

Some of the more popular styles for teenagers include themed rooms. This can include sports themes for boys or butterflies for girls. Or, try a unisex theme such as an all black and white room with a few splashes of red. Make it more feminine with big red flowers or more masculine with a few red squares on the walls.

Polka dots are in style right now for girls and can incorporate a teen's favorite colors. Wall murals are also versatile. Work from a stencil, paint by number pattern or use wallpaper murals. With a mural, you can do just about any theme you can imagine, such as:

  • Outer space
  • Seaside
  • Sunsets
  • Palm trees
  • Castle
  • Sports stadium
  • Aliens
  • The great outdoors
  • Gothic look with dark colors

Individual Style

Have a unique idea, but can't find a stencil or pattern that quite matches? You can show your own individual style in a number of ways. Posters can make a great addition to a plain wall and are inexpensive enough to swap out regularly. This can keep your room looking fresh or make for an easy change when tastes change.

Why not try painting squares in bright colors slightly larger than the posters? This would create an even more geometric and fashionable look.

Hobbies and personal interests should also play a part in the design of your room. Are you an artist? Create an art wall with corkboard and stencils to display your best pieces. Have tons of friends? Purchase inexpensive frames from the dollar store and paint the frames in the colors of your choice (be sure to take out the glass first or tape it off) and make a display wall of all your pictures.

Have a favorite sports team? Paint the room in team colors. In addition to bedding featuring their emblem, try tacking team shirts, baseball caps and other memorabilia on the walls.

Local artists can be commissioned to paint a themed mural for a lot less than you might think. Get some estimates and decide if this option is right for you. Local art schools and art teachers at the local public schools are good sources for artists to paint murals.

Whether you shop the high-end boutiques or your local thrift store, the main thing to keep in mind when decorating a teen's bedroom is to be creative and open to unusual decorations that suit your teen's personality and style.

The article is partially true, but I'd like to point out that you didn't put PINK in the list. I like pink. I'm 15, and I'm designing my own room. Thanks for the tips, though.
