Trusting a Site

Make sure you look around the site and search online to see if the website you are about to download from is legitimate. You don't want to accept a virus program for automatic installation on your computer. When the popup box comes up with the name of the file, try to search for that file on a search engine such as Yahoo! or Google. Alternatively, you can specifically search for the site's name and see if anyone has posted information about its legitimacy.

Most people have heard of Dateline's special program, To Catch a Predator. This show used undercover cops and teenagers to catch pedophiles on the Internet. Even though this show scared many people from continuing, there are still many untrustworthy individuals in chatrooms.

Pedophiles will enter teen chatrooms looking for girls or boys. The predator will form a relationship with someone underage by either lying or telling the truth about his or her age. After the predator establishes trust, he or she will arrange to meet the teenager in a private area such as when parents are not home or in a hotel room.

You Can Still Use Chatrooms: Just be Cautious

Just because you have to beware of predators on the Internet doesn't mean you can't ever communicate with others your age on the Internet; you just have to be safe about it. Communicating with a large group at one time is much safer than starting private messages with someone. If you do start private messaging someone, NEVER give out identifying information such as your full name, address or telephone number, no matter how nice the person sounds. The person you are talking to might be lying about his or her age and interests to gain your trust. Be careful and have fun while chatting online!
