Being at the top of teenage fashion is easier said than done. LoveToKnow got some tips to this important challenge by spending some time chatting with Marshall's style expert Amy Cafazzo. Spending years in the fashion industry has given Amy a great eye for what's in and what's out for teens this year.

Inspiration Found

Amy has spent years honing her craft as a fashion expert for Marshall's clothing. Now with her up to date style sense, she is able to help countless teens achieve the look they desire without having to blow all their babysitting money.

What is your background in fashion and how did you become interested in working with the teen genre?

I've been interested in fashion since I was a teen so this position was a natural (and very exciting!) opportunity for me. I think all young teens start by reading Seventeen and other magazines to see what's hot and what's not. So many of the fashion trends start with teens who are often more edgy and willing to try new and exciting things, so it's still really fun to check out teen magazines and check in with my nine teenage nieces and nephews!

Fashion Forward

What are some of the hot styles available for tweens and teens today?

Long tunics and sweater dresses layered over opaque tights look fab for both teens and tweens. I also think this year's cropped jackets are a great addition to the layered-look.

Do today's fashions have influence from any set decade or era from the past?

Fashion is so cyclical. I think that this season in particular we see 60's and 80's influences particularly with the cropped jackets and long tunic tops and sweaters.

If a teen is on a budget, what are five absolute essentials for a great wardrobe?

Ballet flats, ankle boots, cropped jacket, sweater dress, and tunic top.

  • We also found out that button down shirts, distinctive belts and an all over laid back or emo look is popular with young men.

What "uncool" fashion fumbles should teens steer clear of?

Tough question. I think most anything goes with teens - it's more about how you put it all together.

What are the most popular stores for teens right now?

I'm a big fan of both Marshalls and T.J. Maxx - store where you can get designer names for less. And I love any store with a big "SALE" sign outside!

Anything else about teenage fashion you would like to share?

Be adventurous - fashion is a reflection of how you feel inside. Choose clothes that make you feel confident and fabulous!

Inspiration from Amy's interview reminds us once again that the important thing is to be true to yourself, no matter what look you lean toward. For all teens, including teenage guys looking to impress a girl for the first time, the right fashion look for you is always going to be what you are most comfortable in.
