Teenage Male Models
From LoveToKnow Teens
Teenage male models are often popular with teenagers for a variety of reasons. Whether you're a teen interested in becoming a male model or someone who would like to learn more about teenage male models, keep reading!
Background of Male Modeling
To a certain extent, male modeling developed along side of female modeling. While the high caliber glamour shots often still go to women, male models are now required in the fashion industry to model everything from perfumes in print ads to skateboards. Male models also have a few areas of modeling at their disposal that women have trouble breaking into. These areas include:
- Sports modeling
- Sneaker modeling for more urban brands
- Rugged wear
- Occupational related clothing
As a result, the demand for male models has increased over the years, especially for teen male models. More and more companies are now advertising to male teens and expanding their lines to include boys.
How are Teen Male Models Found?
Often, male models in their teens don't wake up and decide to go into modeling but instead, are discovered by agents. Agents find teen male models the following ways:
- At the mall
- Scoping out local teen venues
- After mild success in sports, agents will often recruit teens
- Through talent searches
- High school career centers
Teenage Male Models
Popular male models through the past decade have included:
- Tyson Beckford: Though he started his modeling career in his early twenties, he directs most of his work towards teens. He's most popular for his work with Ralph Lauren.
- Tyrese Gibson: After participating in commercials for years, Tyrese landed a Tommy Hilfiger advertisement at the age of seventeen and has been a popular model since then.
- Tyrone Edmond: A Haitian born model, you can see Tyrone in spreads from Tommy Hilfiger to Donna Karen.
- Kellan Lutz: Though he is now best known for playing Emmett Cullen in the Twillight series, Lutz was prior known for being one of the boys in the Abercrombie and Fitch catalogues.
How To Become a Male Model as a Teen
Often, teens are in the best position to start modeling versus their twenty-something competition because there is a much larger market available to them.
- The first step to becoming a model is figuring out what type of modeling you would like to do. Whether it is watches or pants, figure out what fits your personality and body the best. You can also reach out to a talent agency for advice if you are not sure exactly what would fit you.
- Find an agency. Many models will lament at how hard it can be to find an agency to book them. However, you can't get many jobs without one. In order to prepare for shopping yourself to agencies, get headshots done by a respectable company. You may even want to hire a photographer to get a small portfolio together.
- Become prepared to model. Modeling requires certain knowledge like poses and being aware of your body. Practice your modeling skills so that you can be prepared to land jobs. If you need help, consider trying to network with other male teen models either in person, through your agent or on the Internet.
- Work with your agent to get gigs. Once you have an agent, finding work for you is more their job than yours. Keep in contact and go on any go-sees (interviews for clients) that your agent books. With any hope, the modeling jobs will roll in for you.
Final Thoughts
For teenage male models, it can often seem difficult to break into the industry. However, if modeling is something you are passionate about, keep at it until you make it. There are different levels of success in modeling and if you are dedicated, you are sure to meet one of those levels.
