What to Include in Your Teenage Model Portfolio

The first thing you should do before starting in this industry is get some professional pictures of yourself. These pictures are the first things an agency will see so you will want to make a good impression. Search for experienced photographers in your community that have done work with teenage model portfolios before because they will know which poses and types of photos will look the best.

Once you have some photos, start sending them to agencies. You can do this by mail or search on the Internet for agencies to e-mail your photos to. Include a brief resume with your pictures that tells your height, age, sizes, weight, recent work, training, and contact information.

Once you start to get some interest in your pictures, you will want to create a portfolio so you can have something to show during your interviews. You want to show the agency that you have the look clients will want for their products. Here are some of the different poses you might want to include:

  • Body shot
  • Three fourth shot
  • Headshot

This portfolio will also be useful when you go to open casting calls or auditions the agency has set up for you. Remember that looking natural is the best way to present yourself and what agencies and clients will look for, so don't use too much makeup.

Beware of Fraud

Many fraudulent agencies will ask for money from you promising work, but will never deliver. Many teen models have bought into these scams and have lost thousands of dollars. Don't become a victim of this type of fraud. Research any company before you apply and talk to others who have used the company. You can easily search for company information on the Internet by searching for the name and placing the word 'scam' or 'fraud' after it. You might want to check the Better Business Bureau as well.

Whenever you meet with an agency, bring a parent with you. You never know whom you are going to meet and if the person is legitimate. Furthermore, if they are interested in working with you, there will be a lot of paperwork and policy talk that may be confusing. It is always helpful to have an adult present to ensure you retain your rights.

Be Patient

It takes times to be noticed so don't get discouraged if you don't receive many responses to your e-mails or mail inquiries. Thousands of teens submit his or her photos everyday so it may take a while before someone spots you. The modeling industry is competitive so try to research as much as you can about it and improve your portfolio as much as possible. Get yourself out there for exposure by attending open calls and visiting agencies. It's hard work, but once you get noticed it will all be worth it. The most important thing to remember is not to give up!
