Teenager Reading
From LoveToKnow Teens
Teenager reading is so important for many reasons. It can help teens escape to another place, find answers to questions, or find comfort in knowing they are not alone in the topsy turvy stage of adolescence.
David Levithan, Scholastic Editorial Director and Vice President

David Levithan oversees the Scholastic fiction list, crossmedia publishing program and the PUSH teen imprint. He also edits authors such as Garth Nix, Ann M. Martin, Gordon Korman, Coe Booth, Holly Black, Blue Balliett, Anthony Horowitz, and (with Billy Merrell) the award-winning anthologies, The Full Spectrum.
The Importance of Reading
Why is it important for teenagers to read books?
It’s important for teenagers to be involved in narratives other than their own, and books are an essential part of that. Through books, teens can explore their own identities as well as learn to empathize with identities and experiences that don’t match their own. If young children read for story, teens read for connection – whether it’s on a personal level (the book reminds them of themselves) or an interpersonal level (the book teaches them about other people).
How can books help teenagers with issues in their life?
A good book can help teenagers see the different roads they can take – both good and bad – and can help them navigate those roads.
What are the different types of books a teen can read?
Teens can read anything, whether it be the dystopian vision of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins or the vampire romance of Twilight or the hip realty of Maureen Johnson’s Suite Scarlett. The great thing about teen literature is its width and breadth – no matter who a kid is, there should be a book that speaks to their experience.
How Parent's Can Promote Teenager Reading
How can parents encourage their teen to read more?
They can encourage teenager reading by not bugging them about it, and at the same time demonstrating a reading culture at home. The ideal teen reader has parents who model reading by reading all the time themselves, but who are hands-off as far as what the teen can or can’t read.
Finding Books for Teens
How can teenagers find a book they will like?
Many teens just head to the bookstore and look at the covers and the blurbs. They can ask a bookseller or librarian for a suggestion. Other teens follow book blogs like Teen Reads or get book recommendations from social networking sites like facebook.
If a teen or parent is interested in purchasing teen books, where is a good place to look for them?
As the saying goes, "Wherever fine books are sold." Scholastic has a robust website, where readers can scour our titles and find the right ones. The PUSH teen imprint, not only highlights teen books but also has an annual writing contest where today’s kids can become tomorrow’s novelists.
LovetoKnow Teens would like to thank David Levithan for his knowledge on the topic of teenager reading.
