Teens Bra

From LoveToKnow Teens

Whether she is experiencing the first growth spurts of puberty or looking for more support during gym class, a teen's bra is an essential, but sometimes troubling, article of clothing.

Take your measurements to find the ideal bra for your body.

Fitting

Too many females, including teens, wear improperly fitting bras. Whether it's your first bra or your fiftieth, finding a bra that is right for your body begins with finding your measurements.

Band Size

For the band measurement, wrap a tape measure around your chest, just under your breasts. The tape should be snug, but not so tight that it digs into the skin. Add five to that number, and you have your band size. If the result is an odd number, round up to the next highest number. You will be more likely to find a comfortable fit, and you can always take advantage of the adjustable hooks on bras to tighten the band just the right amount.

Cup Size

To find your cup size, you will next need to wrap the tape measure around the center of your breasts. For this measurement, you want to hold the tape loosely, as pulling too tight will result in an inaccurate reading. Subtract your original chest size from the breast measurement. If the difference is less than one inch, you need a AA cup. If the difference is one inch, you need an A cup. A difference of two inches requires a B cup, a difference of three inches a C, and so on. For those girls that fall between cup sizes, some brands also offer "barely B" cups and similar options.

Shopping for a Teen's Bra

Now, armed with your measurement results, it's time to find a free afternoon and get ready for some serious shopping.

Available Brands and Retailers

You can find bras in a wide range of stores, from discount retailers to high-end department stores. Check out the following brands and retailers for an assortment of bra styles for teens:

  • Maidenform, a well-known bra manufacturer, offers a line of lingerie just for teens. You can find bralettes, underwires, and sports bras in several cute designs.
  • Although some parents may be concerned about the store's sexy image portrayed in advertising campaigns, Victoria's Secret's selection of bras is hard to beat. The website also offers the ability to search for smaller sizes, including 32AA.
  • For teens who don't like a lot of frills, Jockey sells cotton and microfiber bras in a variety of styles, including sports bras, underwires, and racerbacks.
  • Bare Necessities offers a large selection of bras in sizes from 30AA to 58C and everything in between. Shopping for bras online is not ideal, but may be necessary for hard-to-find sizes.
  • One Hanes Place is another online shopping option with a wide range of sizes, from 32AA to 58J. However, the brands sold on this site, including Playtex and Bali, are also widely available in clothing retailers, so you can browse the site and visit your local store to try on your favorites.

Shopping Tips

No matter where you shop, keep the following tips in mind for a proper fit:

  • The bra strap should make a straight line across your back. If it rises up, you either need to adjust the straps or find a different design.
  • If you lift your arms, the band should not rise up. If it does, this means the bra is too loose.
  • Bra cups shouldn't make the breasts bulge out the top or sides.
  • The best way to find the right bra is to try on many different brands and styles. Be patient in your search. With so many bra designs available, you should never have to sacrifice comfort for style.

Too Sexy?

Provocative underwear, including bras, presents a dilemma for many parents. They balk at the idea of their daughters wearing such sexualized undergarments. Teens just want to wear what's in style, even if that means buying a matching thong and push-up bra set. Engaging in a dialogue with your daughter will take you much farther than making pronouncements that forbid a particular type of undergarment. Discuss your concerns with her at a neutral time when you're both calm. You shouldn't wait to bring up the issue until she's standing in the middle of the department store lingerie section with an armful of barely-there bras she loves. Don't forget the practical points. Is a see-through lace bra really providing the comfort and support she needs?

With so many diverse teens' bra options available, you're sure to be at the head of the class in style, comfort, and support.

Hi Ash,

Have you tried to have one special ordered? You can try places like JCPenney that will measure you and then send off for a bra that fits those measurements. You can also search online for custom made bras! Good luck!
