Hi Markeria- We're not a modeling agency here at LoveToKnow Teens. You'll have to find an agent in your area, so check out your phone book to find the listings for them.

Hi Chelsea M., LoveToKnow Teens not a modeling agency. However, you can find one in your local phone book under "modeling agents" or "talent agents."

Hi Ricky and Amber, The place to start is with a local modeling agency. You'll need an agent to land any jobs. Look in your phone book or the online Yellow Pages (www.yellowpages.com) to find one. They are usually listed under "talent agency" or "modeling agency."

Lupe,

It does depend on the modeling agency. Some do charge hefty fees to hunt and advertise for you. I am not sure if there are any modeling agencies that work for free...I would suggest calling different ones and asking around. You could also go to open calls and do some of your own publicity!

-- Contributed by: Marcelina Hardy

hi my name is lupe... and i was just wondering do all modeling agencies charge you to become a model?

-- Contributed by: lupe

Hi Jody,

I am not familiar with any modeling agencies in the UK but I did a quick search online and found some websites of agencies in London. I'm not sure where you are located but you might want to try searching in a search engine for your area and the keyword 'modeling agency' to see if something comes up. Good luck!

Hi Shannon,

Yes, most modeling agencies charge you to get you started. You might want to get your own pictures together and start going to casting events in your area. You can look online for these... Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Marcelina Hardy

I've always been told that I should be a model, but when it comes to modeling agencies I can't seem to find one that doesn't charge me or something dumb like that. This really is my passion but I just can't seem to find a good way to start.

Contact the model agencies that have told you that you are too young and ask them if they have information on modeling for your age. You might be able to get some resources that way.

Hello, I was looking over your website, and I was wondering if you know any modeling places where it is free too take photo shoots, for the age of 13 or 14 year old, in Maryland. I am trying too take some free photo shoots for publicity. I would greatly appreciate it if you would email me or contact me and let me now if there are, and there contacting websites or numbers. Thank you very much.

Shoshana,

Since we are not associated with any model agencies, you might want to check with Ford about your questions. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Marcelina Hardy

Hello. I recently signed up to be a model at Ford. I am under the age of 18.Would I still have a great chance of getting in? And how long should I wait to here from them?

-- Contributed by: shoshana

Hi Miranda, Not sure what you're referring to by sending pictures through the mail. Here at LoveToKnow Teens, we're not a modeling agency and we can't help you get a modeling contract. It is best to find an agent locally or regionally- look in your phone book for modeling or talent agencies and find out whether they want to see you in person, or if they want you to send photos first.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

How could I get help to apply for modeling if I could only send a picture through the mail?

-- Contributed by: miranda

Hi Jessica, Have you ever seen the babies on television modeling diapers? That should answer your question! Models of all ages are needed for different modeling gigs. Get yourself an agent- look in the phone book for agent listings.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I'm 14 and dying to be a model. Am I too young?

-- Contributed by: Jessica

Hi Kathleen, It isn't too young to model. Get yourself an agent and see where it leads!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I'm 14 years old. Is that too young to model? I'm average height- around 5'5 or 5'6.

-- Contributed by: Karleen

Hi Kathleen, No, you don't have to be a nude model, though many models are scantily clad, even when they are dressed. There are all kinds of models, from nude to lingerie and fully clothed models. It depends on what you are comfortable with. Never compromise your own standards and you'll be fine.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I'm 15 years old and I'm skinny ,but I'm tall. Do you have to be really tall to be a model and when I'm older do you have to be in the nude?

-- Contributed by: kathleen pretty

Taylor,

There are many steps and avenues to becoming a model, and LoveToKnow has a bunch of articles to help you:

-- Contributed by: Georgia and Danielle

Hi Everyone, If you want to model, you have to get an agent. That is pretty much a given. To do this, get your picture taken and either go to a cattle call at a local agency or look in the phone book to find agencies and send your photos to them. They will decide whether to contact you for an interview or not. Modeling is a job- you have to have a certain look that they need for commercial modeling jobs. Each agency usually has a certain type of model they are looking for, so don't get discouraged if some modeling agencies turn you down.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

What is the best modeling gig - clothes or make up?

-- Contributed by: micaela

I'm 17 year old male and I want to be a super model, but don't have enough knowledge of modeling.

-- Contributed by: zaff

People have come to me and said "Do you model" or "You should do it," but I'm afraid they might tell me I am not skinny enough. I'm not fat, I'm normal.

-- Contributed by: p

I always wanted to model just that I have colored hair like sometimes pink, green and purple. Is that okay because I know many models with pink and blue hair. ???

-- Contributed by: Ultraviolet

I really want to be involved in modeling, but I'm afraid I won't get in because I don't have perfect skin or perfect hair. Is there any requirements for that?

-- Contributed by: unamed

Hi Grace, Start by getting your pictures taken by a photographer, even Wal-Mart if you're on a budget. Then locate a modeling agency locally and either make an appointment to meet with an agent or send your pictures in for an evaluation. That's pretty much how to start. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

Hi Rachel, Most models are at a minimum of 5'8", but it depends on what kind of model you are. Petite models can be much shorter, and runway models are usually taller.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I'm pretty new to modeling and i want begin doing it, but I have no idea where to begin.

-- Contributed by: Grace Wurth

Is there a specific height requirement to be a sucessful model?

Please e-mail me with your answer. It would be VERY much appreciated. Thank you, -Rachel

-- Contributed by: Rachel D.

Hi Rachel, If you're paying an agency to represent you online, odds are you won't get any jobs. There are many of these online "agencies" that will put your photo on them, but there aren't too many scouts (if any) who find their models this way, honest! Your best bet is to find a local agent to represent you. A legitimate agent won't take any money unless they book you a job, then they get a percentage as their fee.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I really want to become a model, but I'm not sure how. I am new to this. How can a teen sign up with a modeling agency online without have to pay or give a credit card number because my mom really wanted this for me and I want to surprise her.

Hi Helpies, You have three options: have someone take a photo of you with a different camera, hire a professional photographer or have your photos taken at a retail store, such as J.C. Penney or Wal-Mart. Hang in there and good luck with your dream!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I need help. Everyone I meet tells me I should be a model and it's been my dream since I was old enough to remember. The problem is my pictures never come out quite the way that I want them to! Maybe it's because my camera is crappy! But all in all my pics always come out terrible. Does anyone have any tips?

-- Contributed by: HELPIES!!!!

Hi Reyna, There isn't much you can do if your parents won't allow you to model. If you're under age your parents have to co-sign contracts. I would try to reason with them that this is your heart's desire, and do it without being angry. Hang in there!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

Hi Hannah, LoveToKnow Teens isn't affiliated with any modeling agencies, so we can't send any jobs your way. You need to find an agent locally; look in the phone book and set up an appointment or go to an open call. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

Hi Racheal, Did you read our other modeling articles? If not, that's a good place to start. You will need to get some photos of yourself and look for an agent in your area. Look for agents in your phone book and you can have your photos taken at a store like Wal-Mart.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

Hello, my name is Hannah. I am 13 years old(almost) and I would love to be a model. It has always been my dream to be like a bra model, but no one has accepted me yet. If you could email me about a job or anything, I would LOVE it.

Hi Laura, You'll never know unless you try. I certainly can't say anything since I have no idea what you look like! Get your photos ready and go see an agent. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I was just wondering, I'm not that confident in my looks, but all my friends and relatives say I should get into modeling. What do you think?

-- Contributed by: laura

Hi Jarel, You shouldn't have to pay any money to be represented by a modeling agency up front - they get a percentage of your earnings when you get paid.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

i was wondering is it true the more money you pay for a modeling agency the better it is?

-- Contributed by: Jarel

Hi Christina, You need to find an agent locally, and to do this you'll have to get some photos ready to show the agent. This website doesn't have a modeling agency, but there are links to modeling agencies under the subtitle, Where To Go Next.

My name is Briana. I'm a 15 year old 5'10" Hispanic, and I am interested in modeling. What size do you think I should be to even consider it. Thank you.

-- Contributed by: Briana

Hi Belinda, Have you ever heard of body makeup and airbrushing? A few stretch marks aren't that unusual. You could even use some fade cream to help speed up their fading process.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

Hello my name is Belinda. I am almost 16 and I've always wanted to become a model, But I'm not as tall, so maybe like the non-runway model? But I also have stretch marks. Will that count against me for not becoming one? Ha ha, take your time and i hope to see your reply soon!

-- Contributed by: Belinda Her

LTK Is NOT a modeling agency. Potential models MUST contact a local agency to become represented and get jobs. No one from this website will contact you about modeling.

Hi Chantelle, Modeling is first and foremost a job. While some of the super models you hear about are pampered, they paid their dues to get where they are today. If they act a little diva-like, it is expected. However, someone just getting started can expect to work long hours and may not make a lot of money in the beginning, after all, it is a VERY competitive business. Modeling is just like any other job- if you love it then go for it... and yes, confidence is a must!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I really want to become a plus size model. I have the looks, so everyone says, but I want advice. Is it worth it? Is it that fun? I love being in front of the camera and stuff, but I just don't think I have enough confidence.

I really love modeling whenever I get new clothes. I model them to my family. I'm 13 turning 14 and other than that I have no experience. I have an interesting look, but it's more like the girl next door. I've always wanted to be a model when I grew up since I was little, but I don't know if I have what it takes.

I am 12 turning 13 and I really want to be a model. I have only done 2 local fashion shows, but they weren't anything big, just modeling for the store. I love couture and would love to model for them someday. My looks are sort of different and I hope it's not a bad kind of different. I love fashion and would die to be a model.

My name is Merilyn. My passion is modeling. I am 15 years of age, 5' tall. I have green eyes. I am very thin and I have modeled for different agencies and am hoping to get accepted again. I hope my dreams of modeling again come true.

Hi, I'm interested in becoming a teen model and I would like some feedback on how to get started.

-- Contributed by: jamie

Hi Abigail, No, there isn't a certain weight you have to be in order to become a model. Your proportions are important, especially if you are tall. However, plus-size models and petite size models can weigh less or more than the norm. My advice is to not starve yourself to look incredibly thin. This past year European fashion shows began banning models that were too thin because they believe it is sending the wrong message to young women. Thin isn't always healthy. I hope the United States finally gets a clue as well.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

Hi Jenna, You shouldn't have to spend a lot of money to get an agent. However, there is a lot of time and expense in traveling to modeling gigs, especially if you land ones outside of the country. It all depends on how much you want to do, and where you want to go. Just getting an agent though isn't expensive- all you need are some professional photos and a resume.

I'm 13. I'm skinny. I weigh about 98. Brown hair and eyes. A lot of my friends and family say I should consider modeling. The only problem is my parents don't want to spend a lot of money. Is that a problem?

Hi Cynthia, Most agencies want you to live within a certain radius of their office, usually 75-100 miles. If there truly isn't any modeling agencies in this particular range for you, you'll need a parent to help you out. You could also try getting a basic membership on New Faces, that membership level doesn't cost anything and all kinds of modeling agencies will see your photos. Don't give up just yet, but I think you'll need an adult to help drive you outside of the area where you live if there are no agencies nearby. Check out Yellow Pages.com and look for modeling agencies in your region or state to get names of agencies further away.

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

Hello, I'm Cynthia. I want to be a model so bad but I just don't know what to do. I live in Arkansas, so no kind of modeling agency or anything like that comes here. I have tried twice before to model and one was called Zoom modeling, but the wanted me to pay. Tyra Banks said if they ask you to pay before you even do it it's usually a scam. I have been looking up modeling things online, but most of them ask you to pay and I don't have any money, so what can I do.

Hi, I'm also 14 turning 15 in July. I live in the UK and I'm a size 6. Modeling has been a great passion of mine for a while and I am trying to look for UK modeling agencies. I haven't really thought of a specific area in modeling, but right now, at my age I would love to be in teen magazines. I have personality and hopefully the looks.

Hi Kayla, Click on the links to the agencies in the above article. Each modeling site will give you the information you need to submit photos or where their open calls are. Read all the details and make sure to only submit quality professional photos to the agents.

Hi Diamond, You don't have to be super skinny to be a model. There are other modeling divisions besides runway. Try the plus size divisions of the modeling agencies listed above. Click on the links (blue underlined names of the modeling agencies), and see what they are looking for. Get some good photos taken of you by a professional (even WalMart is okay for this! Make copies of your photos there too- very inexpensive). Send out your pictures to the agencies. You'll never know if you don't try.

Hi. Im 17, about to be 18 in 6 months. I don't ever comment on sites like this, but I figured it's time for me to take the next step forward. I have always loved the thought of modeling and like Monique said, watched every America's Next Top Model that there is, but I'm 5'8" and a size 4. I just didn't know if that is skinny enough to model. I have a naturally dark complexion and dark hair, light brown eyes. This is really something that I'm interested in, but just don't know how to get started.

-- Contributed by: Kayla

Hi. I am 12 turning 13 in less than a month. As young as I am I have always wanted to model! I have watched all of America's Next Top Model shows to learn the poses and I have practiced in the mirror and I believe this is truly my dream job. I am tall, skinny, light skin, and brown eyes. I've been told that I have exotic beauty and I love to do the catwalk and know I have killer poses. This information has been so helpful!

This helps a lot, thank you. I shall keep this in mind when I go for modeling jobs.

Hi. I'm 16 about to be 17 in September. I am tall, lightskined and have green eyes. I have never modeled before, but when I was about 6 or 7 I was in a movie. I would really love to become a model.

To Those Who Want to Model: The only way to launch your modeling career is to get yourself an agent. In order to get an agent, you need a few pictures of yourself to send or give to the agents in your area. Have a professional take your photos so they are nice and clear, or have someone take pictures of you against a solid background (no clutter behind or around you). Find the listing of agents in your area through your phone book. The only way you'll find out if you have what they are looking for is to start pounding on the doors of agents to see who wants to represent you. Agents aren't going to come to you; you'll need to make the effort to see them.

I have not done modeling in my lifetime either, but I am 5'1-5'2, I'm 103 pounds, size 0. Blue eyes, black hair, tan. I am short, but I have a friend who modeled for Barbizon and she is about 5'3 I'm assuming.

Hi Ashley, Check out the New Faces directory- they have quite a few listings of modeling agencies worldwide, a few are listed as scouting in Newfoundland.

As for the diet part, a healthy balanced diet is always the best way to go. Fad diets never work and people will return to their old ways if they don't learn to eat a balanced diet. Check out our sister diet site on LTK, Diet.

Hi, My name Is Ashey McCarthy. I am 14 years old, and have never had any model experience. I am 145 lbs and about 5"6 in height, I have hazel eyes and dark brown hair. I LOVE models; they are beautiful but... most seem anorexic, I don't want to be an anorexic model and I'd rather be plus size instead of being a 'big' normal size model. I love to watch Canadas and America's(MOSTLY) Next top Model. What can I do to try and keep a healthy weight? Also, How can I find jobs?

By the way...I live in Newfoundland so there's not much for me here.

Any Suggestions?

Hi Alaedrea, If you enjoy what your doing, keep on doing it. I hope you have an agent, if not, check the yellow pages in your local phone book or ones from neighboring towns. Good luck!

Hi, I'm Alaedrea. I'm sixteen years old. I have done modeling before. I don't want to say I'm really good at it- I'm some what good at it and I'm really dedicated. I have hazel eyes and I'm 5'4 and I'm a perfect 110.

Hi Aimee, Good makeup can cover anything, and don't forget about airbrushing. If you think all models have perfect skin, you are wrong. Very few people are blessed with perfect skin, especially when they are teenagers. If you want a name of a famous model who had bad skin as a teenager, here's one- Elizabeth Hurley. She is the first to tell people that she had terrible acne, and still has the scars to prove it. (But see what good makeup can do?!)

Hey, Like most teens I have spots. Im always worried about not getting to be a model, I have tryed lots of things to get rid of them but cant find anything to work. Will this ruin my chance of being a model?

Hi Denise, This website doesn't own or operate a modeling agency. This article was for information only. If you want to model, you'll have to find an agent where you live. Check out your phone book for listings and then either go see the agents or send your pictures to them. That is really the only way to get an agent and find work.

Hi Stefanie,

I hate to sound like a broken record, but here goes again. The only way to launch your modeling career is to get yourself an agent. In order to get an agent, you need a few pictures of yourself to send or give to the agents in your area. Find the listing of agents in your area through your phone book. The only way you'll find out if you have what they are looking for is to start pounding on the doors of agents to see who wants to represent you. If you've already done some runway modeling, hopefully you have some pictures for your portfolio already- use those pictures to show the agents you visit. Good luck!

Hi Kayla,

The only way to get a modeling job is to go out and look for them in your area. Find an agent (use the phone book to find them), then either send them your pictures or take them to the agent personally. If they like your look, they may offer you a contract to represent you. There really is no other way to break into the modeling business other than to go out there yourself and start banging on agent's doors.

Hi Tysheena, It is great that you want to be a plus size model! Check out the modeling agencies in your area to see who represents them, then send in your photos. Since the average size of a woman in the USA is 16, there are plenty of jobs for plus size models in the industry. Good luck!

Hi Meagan, You are lucky you have the support of your parents in this endeavor. Modeling is a hard job though, especially when you are first starting out. The first thing you have to have is an agent. So, finding an agency is the first thing on your list, along with having some photos to show the agents. Get a head shot of you smiling, one head shot of you not smiling, a full length front and side to take with you on calls. Go to open calls if they have them in your area or make appointments to see agents. There are also plenty of legitimate modeling agencies that take photos online (for example, www.fordmodels.com). Don't take rejections too hard (every agency is looking for different "looks") and keep pursuing your dream!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

Hi Imani, Anyone who wants to charge you money to model isn't a legitimate modeling agency. It is the agent's job to get you paying gigs. Most agents will have you get professional photos that they can send out, but they can usually deduct the cost of the photos from your earnings if you have cash flow problems. Keep looking for good agents- they are out there if you're willing to keep looking. Try some of the bigger agencies and send your photos online to them (try www.fordmodels.com, for example).

Hi readers, if you want to be a model you need to find an agent. LoveToKnow is not a modeling agency and has no connection with any agency. The best way to get a modeling contract with an agency is to pound the pavement and get your pictures out there. Go to open calls for models or make an appointment with an agency to show your pictures. Remember, you don't need expensive pictures- just have a friend take a head shot, a full length front shot and full length side view shot in clothing that shows your figure (don't wear ruffles, slouchy jeans or grungy clothing). Then get some cheap copies made at a local drug store or Wal-Mart. Then you have to do the rest- make those appointments to see an agent in your area!

-- Contributed by: Patricia

Hi Casey,

You need to find an agency that is near or in the town you live in. Most agents only take clients that live within 50-100 miles of them. As for your participation in sports, your modeling agent will expect you to take the jobs they find for you- since modeling is a job, it would have to come first. If you started turning down jobs, your agent could dump you.

Hi Carla and Kimberly,

Check out the info I gave Tyler on becoming a model. One thing you need to have in order to be a model is a lot of self-confidence. How you feel about yourself translates easily on film. You have to go into this business with a thick skin and the ability to get in front of a camera and sell yourself and the clothes you are wearing.

If you are serious about modeling, the only way you will get that first job is to get your photos in front of an agent!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

I always wanted to be a model but never believe it myself but everybody always told me to try to be a model because i can do it and i know i can.

Hi Tyler,

Have you tried any local modeling agencies? That would be a good place to start, as long as you don't live in a rural area (that's another story). Local agencies can get you print work in local magazines and catalogs, Sunday inserts and the like. This is one way to build a portfolio.

If you are lucky enough to live in a large city like NYC, LA or Chicago, there are plenty of agencies there. Go with the big names and attend a "cattle call." Find out when they have their walk-in days for people who want to be models. Make sure to bring a head shot and a side-view, full length shot that shows your body well.

Now, if you live in a rural area with no sign of a modeling agency for miles, consider sending in your photo to a large modeling agency, like Ford Models, (they currently accept online submissions of photos), or Elite. They'll want the same kinds of photos, but they don't have to be professional shots. Professional agents know what they want, and they don't need fancy set up shots to see if you have potential.

Your height is definitely an asset- as for the weight, it depends on the agency and what they are looking for. Big and Tall print models are usually heavier than runway model guys.

HI my name is Tyler i am a 17 year old male that wants to be a model I have no knowledge of modeling. I am about 6ft and i am atleast 205 pounds. I will loose the fat but i just need to know if i have a chance i have some pro pics taken of me but thats all. i am wondering if someone can help me be a model

-- Contributed by: Tyler

Hi Ranysha,

Modeling depends a great deal upon your height, especially runway modeling. The minimum height most agencies look for is 5'8; the taller, the better. You also need to be very fit and thin- the more fit, the better since healthy looking models are very in right now. Models often have skin problems, but as you may already know, make up and airbrushing can fix most any flaw. A good example of a beautiful model with skin problems (in her past) is Elizabeth Hurley. Even though she had bad acne and acne scars, she is considered a very beautiful woman, even today after having a baby!

I do want to add that there are other types of models, in case you aren't the typical runway model. There are petite models and plus size models that do a lot of catalog spreads.

If you really want to model, check out local modeling agencies to see if they have any open calls or will look at your photos. Any reputable agency won't ask you to get expensive photos first- they should know whether or not they want to represent you by basic photos of you- a head shot and a full body shot, taken by a friend or family member.

Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Charlotte Gerber

How can I become a model? Do it matter about height? Can you have skin problems?

-- Contributed by: Ranysha

Hi Isabella,

The first thing you need to know is that it is not necessary to purchase special photos in order to become a model. There are many unscrupulous agencies out there that will never get you a modeling gig, but will charge you a ton of money for photos. That being said, have a friend or family member get a shot of you full length sideways and one face shot. Take or send these photos to REAL modeling agencies (check out the links to the ones in our article). Many of these legit agencies also have one day each week where they accept walk-ins or look-sees for people that want to become models. They can tell you on the spot whether you have the look they need.

Not all agencies will want a particular look- you may have to go to several agencies in order to find an agent. Some agencies like ethnic looking models, some like Ralph Lauren Nordic-looking models, and others like a mixture of looks.

Usually a modeling agency will want you to live within 45-60 miles of their office so they can send you on calls easily. If you live in the country, you may have a problem without good transportation.

Finally, understand that not everyone is model material. No matter how attractive you may be, you will have to fit within a certain height, weight and age range. Don't forget though- there are petite and plus size models in this industry as well.
