List of Prom Themes

Parties like prom need a theme!

Whether you are on the prom planning committee or just looking to throw a few ideas out into the ring, a list of prom themes can have many uses. Most high schools let the graduating class throw ideas together and later vote on what the prom theme will be. Other schools leave the theme up to the prom committee, who can often use all of the input that they can get. Still other schools try to get by without having a theme, leaving the door open for you and your friends to create your own little mini-theme. Whatever reason you think it might be helpful, a list of prom themes is definitely a useful tool for high school teens to have around prom time.

List of Prom Themes

While some of the prom themes out there are based around current events, such as the hit movie of the year or an award-winning sitcom episode, there are other popular themes that can be used year after year:

  • The idea of time can spur theme ideas like "It's About Time," "The Time Is Here," and "Time is Ours."
  • Proms based around decades like the 1950s, 1970s, and the 1980s are always popular.
  • Classic Hollywood inspires many themes like "A Night With Oscar," Star Night," and "Red Carpet Event."
  • Opposites make for great prom themes like "Hot and Cold," "Fire and Ice," and "By Land and Sea."

  • Some schools go with a carnival theme for prom night, such as "Carnival Nights," "A Night at the Carnival," and "Carnival Dreams."
  • Asian-inspired proms can bring a whole different feeling with themes like "Rocking the Orient," "Eastern Sunset," and "An Oriental Night."
  • Everyone loves a great princess & prince-related prom theme like "A Night for Princesses," "Dreams Do Come True," and a general Disney princess theme.

It's Up to You!

One of the best things about prom night is that the theme doesn't have to control the prom. Sure, the theme will change the decor and the tone of the event. However, you can choose to get really into the theme and pick a dress to match or you can choose to wear what you would like. There is no rule saying you must do what the theme says. Dressing to fit the event is all up to you!
